It had been 3 years since I last went on Iso Fieldwork so I was a little nervous when I got on the bus to Kamogawa. (I was also three years older!)
Unfortunately, the weather forecast was for rain so when we got there, I wondered whether we would be able to complete our field work activities or not.
Luckily, as a result of good planning and good luck (perhaps Mr. M’s “teruteru bouzu”?), the rain eased enough on the second day to allow the students to enter the rock pools and search for sea creatures.
Although it was slippery and rainy, students had a fun wonderful time poking, prying, looking under rocks, wading through knee-deep rockpools and chatting with the university students who accompanied us.
Hearing and seeing students’ excitement made me realize how important Kaichi’s fieldwork trips are – not only for learning and practicing various research skills and gaining new experiences, but also for building relationships and teamwork.
Considering the short time and limited fieldwork they could do in the rockpools, all of the groups worked really hard to make excellent posters and presentations!
On top of all this, the hotel rooms and food were also wonderful so, all in all, I think our fieldwork trip to the seashore in Kamogawa was a huge success!!!
